The Odyssey is a ballad based on the experiences of a greek myth. This lyric is also relevant to today’s life because it helps develop a person’s character through their actions, emotions, successes, and mistakes. Even though the time in which this lyric originated is different from today’s, these topics are applicable to our everyday lives. The subjects of pride, family, and assurance help the reader to gain from sonnet ethics.
Odysseus uses assurance throughout the entire sonnet. Odysseus used assurance in his battles with Troy and Ithaca to win each one. Odysseus’s constant attempts to return home is a good example of confidence. He did not run from any obstacle, no matter how large or extreme. Odysseus also showed confidence when he had to rescue his castle from suitors. Tolerance also played a key role in this section. Odysseus must first become a beggar and then suffer the abuse of Antinous. Only then will he reveal himself to them and kill them. Odysseus had the chance to kill Antinous by becoming homeless, but he refused because he believed that Athena would not allow him to execute Antinous. Odysseus decided to convince his girlfriend that he was the one who had fought. Penelope still doesn’t know whether she wants to accept a stranger, even if he passed her test. Odysseus would have been wasting his time if he had not persuaded his wife. Even today, assurance remains a vital topic.
This story also has a subject about pride that is relevant today. Even though pride isn’t helpful, it can be analyzed and used to your advantage. His pride was the root of all his problems in the story. Odysseus was blinded by the cyclops at the start of the adventure. His pride made him gloat to them. To show off his pride he ignored the entire outcome, including the result of incensing ocean’s divine power. Poseidon made his return journey almost impossible to make up for the blinding his son. Antinous, too, was a victim of pride. Antinous could not resist boasting about how he was going to marry Penelope at some point. He was so proud that he threw a stool to Odysseus despite the fact that many divine beings or goddesses disguise themselves as homeless. Antinous is finally the first to be thrown into the abyss due to Odysseus being upset with him because of Antinous’s pride. Telemachus is Odysseus’s child and he does not display pride in this lyric. Telemachus, the child of Odysseus, shows humility in his story. Telemachus is humble, despite being the proud son of Odysseus. He is an honest child who respects anyone older than him and also the gods. He doesn’t believe he has superiority because he was born to Odysseus. He also displays mental fortitude towards the end of the battle when he kills the suitors. Pride has no benefits and is a bad thing. It will make you feel miserable and cause you to lament. Odysseus, Antinous and Telemachus were disciplined for their pride. The topic of pride also shows lament, but it is not a blessing.
The Odyssey ends with the subject of family. Imagine waiting on a relative who is fighting and claiming that he has died. Penelope & Telemachus went through the same thing. The ballad is dominated by family because of this. Odysseus sets out on a journey to return to his home and family. He is desperate to return home after leaving his family to fight in war. The source of his confidence is the realization that if it doesn’t work out, he may end up rejoining his wife and son. He continues to fight against nature in order to get home. Penelope has also made some bad memories, having not seen her beloved for such a long time. She is still waiting for Odysseus to arrive and will not marry. Odysseus’s heart is with her even when the suitors try to force her into marriage. Telemachus also wants to know about his father. He waits for him with great anticipation, even though others keep telling him he’ll never arrive. His father had left when he was a young child to go to war. The struggle to keep the family intact was intense. Telemachus & Penelope feel agony at the thought of Odysseus’s death. Odysseus’s rejoinder with Telemachus is the most memorable part of this lyric. It’s amazing because it is associated with us. We can imagine meeting the relative who has been lost for so many years and finally observing them for over 20 years. You can always count on your family. Family will always be there for you, whether or not your life is going well. Like Penelope & Telemachus, who give Odysseus chance to enter their lives again, your family always has you covered. The story is about family and we can use it in our daily lives.
